About
What happens when two writers take turns writing chapters of a single story, “as equals in imagination”, and with their identities kept secret from one another until the story ends? How far can writers take a story worth sharing, and with whom? Where might it take all of us in the end?
Switch-Lit is a progressive social media platform-publisher of collaborative storytelling launched in 2024 that gives writers of all ages, creative disciplines, and experience levels the custom digital tools for writing turn-based collaborative stories with either a writing partner they already know via email invitation, or with a total stranger via Switch-Lit’s “Subrosa” matchmaking portal for individuals.
As the age of social media merges with artificial intelligence amidst an ongoing loneliness epidemic, the design of Switch-Lit embodies a shift in incentives – from unhealthy hierarchies, passive overconsumption, and isolation 😵💫 to cross-cultural connection, playful practices, and reciprocity 😌.
Team
Switch-Lit is an original project of Studio Esmé (Portland, OR, USA) in collaboration with design and technology partners Studio Airport and September Digital (Utrecht, Netherlands).
Mission
Our social mission is to manifest the collective imagination of an increasingly diverse generation of writers and storytellers around the world through the connective power of collaborative fiction.
Core Values
“Equals in Imagination”
Imagination is a primal power within all humans existing in an unequal society. In the Switch-Lit universe, writers are given the power of equal say in a story that weaves multiple perspectives together and reveals new realities.
“Cross-Cultural Connection”
When conflict-driven cultures push people apart, collaborative storytelling can provide a safe and infinite space for active listening, creative accountability, and deeper connections between writers from different walks of life.
“The Aliveness of Surprise”
Structure is productive, but the element of surprise keeps a connection alive. Unexpected characters, random encounters, and twists of chaos turn into joy for those who choose to embrace it all.
“Artistic Traditions”
The future of collaborative fiction remains rooted in artistic traditions of the past – Surrealism’s dreamlike experiments, the spiritual improvisation of jazz, creation myths of indigenous cultures, hip-hop cyphers, and beyond.
“Cognitive Responsibility”
In the age of social media, the makers of technology-enabled media are in the position to safeguard, if not enhance, a healthy state of mind. What is the cognitively responsible approach, decision, and design at every turn?
Brand Identity
Every writer is a color here. The brand identity is designed around every writer’s identity publicly represented by a unique color of their choice from a color wheel instead of their own uploaded image.
Every finished Switch-Lit story reveals an original cover art (auto-generated by creative code) that blends the two writers’ colors in an abstract representation of the specific story, their collective imagination, and a larger democracy of colors.
